Conventional portraits with photographic references are re-invented in these works through drawing painting, and constructed composition, using heightened colour and narrative and symbolic images added to give clues as to who the subject is, and what do they do and know.
'Action Portrait' of Irven Lewis. 45cm x 35cm. Oil on canvas. 2007. Painted with ref. to earlier life-drawings from Yr 2000. Irven Lewis modelled for these drawings at my temporary studio of Southwark Bridge Rd in yr 2000. Irven was disciplined and focussed in keeping physically demanding 'Action poses' for up to 15 minutes each time. And he contributed his style and creativity in helping me to identify and capture the floor-moves motifs. I already admired him as a jazz-dancer, but after this I also respected him as a Total professional in all that he does.
