Northern Soul

The Dancing, music and culture of the UK Northern Soul Scene has been for me a recurring subject for images expressing togetherness/loneliness, inclusion/exclusion. These works are also a commentary on a long-lived love affair with Black American Soul music. They are visual markers of exploration through 3 decades of music, dancing, people and places,.

Gone Underground

Exploring Northern Soul Dance Culture, based on memories gathered from attending Northern Soul events at Warrington Parr Hall and Queens Hall Bradford (The Hole In The Wall Soul Club) in the mid to late 1980’s. Oil painting on canvas. 30' x 40'. Painted in 2001 from a preliminary charcoal drawing of 1989.
