Northern Soul

The Dancing, music and culture of the UK Northern Soul Scene has been for me a recurring subject for images expressing togetherness/loneliness, inclusion/exclusion. These works are also a commentary on a long-lived love affair with Black American Soul music. They are visual markers of exploration through 3 decades of music, dancing, people and places,.

Frantic Escape

Charcoal and Pastel on Canson Paper. 110cm x 75cm. 1989. Begun whilst still a student at Royal College of Art, and completed soon after. Made with reference to sketches and bad photos made at the then fortnightly Bradford Queens Hall Northern Soul All-nighter. Though then living in London, I would take the 7pm National Express coach to Bradford on Saturday evening, and then take the 9am coach back to London the next morning, (after dancing all night and communing with the spirits of Soul Music).
