I call these images 'live clubscapes'. Recent Images in charcoal and pastel made 'on location' in dance-clubs and live music events. Participation as well as observation feed the outcome (2010-2020).
Drawn/painted 'live' on location at The Powerhouse, Southport Weekender at Butlins, Minehead May 2014. Artists's dry pigment pastel on Canson 'Ingres ' paper. 65cm x 50cm
I went to Southport Weekenders at the Minehead site three times (2012, 2013, 2014). The first one I remember for the outstanding performance of Gregory Porter, but did no artwork. The second one I attended I made a lot of tiny sketchbook drawings and one larger drawing inside the Suncebeat Dome which was never finished because the company that supplied the Dome bought my drawing when in it's early stages. My third visit, in 2014, was my most productive visit. The finished portraits of Kerri Chandler and Giles Peterson were presented at this weekend, which is how I got to meet Kerri, had the honour of being invited to draw ‘live’ on stage during his Dejay set in the Dome, and also during the performance of his Live Music ensemble in the much bigger Powerhouse space.
This is the drawing I made during the live music set, where I had an unusual viewpoint from the back of the stage, right next to the drummer. So its more from a musician/perfomers point of view, looking out from an elevated stage onto a vibrating, yellow-lit crowd. Kerri moved around a lot on the stage, some of the time singing near the front, and other times playing keyboards, which is why he is depicted twice in my drawing. I sat quietly in my seat looking and drawing for tduratiion of the set, butduring the encore I could contain myself no longer, and jumped up to dance.
